Introduction

 

North Coast Medical Training College was established in 2010 was approved by the Clinical Officers’ Council early 2012. The first group of students for Diploma Clinical Medicine and Surgery started in September 2012. In 2013 Nutrition and Dietetics, Community Development in Health, and Nursing are starting.

         The college is located in Bomani, Kikambala Division, Kilifi County, in
         between Mombasa and Kilifi town. Theoretical training and clinical skills
         training takes place at the Kikambala campus. 



         The institution is located in a conducive setting with spacious classrooms,
         library-computer laboratory and Skillslab. Accommodation is available but
         optional. The main hospital for clinical attachment is Kilifi District Hospital.
         In addition other medical centres and hospitals –  private, mission,
         and public are also providing clinical placements.
 


         Training in all courses of North Coast Medical Training College is based on
         appropriate and innovative curricula aimed at training highly competent and
         responsive health workers with well-developed professional and social
         skills necessary to solve the unique problems of local communities in
         developing countries.

 

 

Practical training sites

Students will carry out the practical component of their training various hospitals and health centres in Mombasa County, Kilifi County, Kwale County and Lamu County. The main training hospital is Kilifi District Hospital which is a busy government hospital. Training at the hospital is made extra interesting because KEMRI (Kenya Medical Research Institution) has one of its main centres at this hospital and hence many research activities take place at and around the hospital.

Diploma Course in Clinical Medicine and Surgery

CHPK North Coast Medical Training College was approved for training clinical officers by the Clinical Officers Council of Kenya (COC) in February 2012 and the first class took of in September 2012. The training in the college takes 3 years which includes both theoretical and practical training and will include internal examinations, external examination, and final qualifying examination by the COC. It will be followed by an obligatory one year internship. Succesful completion of this will allow the graduate to be registered as a clinical officer with the COC of Kenya. This nationally recognized diploma will enable graduates to work in the healthcare sector in Kenya and also in many other countries.

To be eligible for admission a student needs to have scored at least a C-plain as a mean score in the KCSE (Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Education) examinations or a comparable secondary school examination score. In addition the student needs to have scored at least a C-plain in English or Kiswahili, a C-plain in Biology or Biological Science, a C-plain in Chemistry and a C-minus in either Physics or Maths.

Diploma Course in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing

CHPK North Coast Medical Training College has been registered by the Nursing Council of Kenya for training Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing. The first class will start in 2013. The training in Commmunity Health Nursing takes 3 1/2 years which includes both theoretical and practical training. Succesful completion of the course and the licensing examination by the Nursing Council of Kenya will allow the graduate to be registered as a Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse (KRCHN) with the Nursing Council of Kenya. This nationally recognized diploma will enable graduates to work in the healthcare sector in Kenya and also in many other countries.

To be eligible for admission a student needs to have scored at least a C-plain as a mean score in the KCSE (Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Education) examinations or a comparable secondary school examination score. In addition the student needs to have scored at least a C-plain in English or Kiswahili, a C-plain in Biology or Biological Science, and a C-minus in either Chemistry, or Physics or Maths.

Diploma Course in Nutrition and Dietetics

Training in Nutritional and Dietetics takes place under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MoHEST). The training in Nutrition and Dietetics takes 3 years which includes both theoretical and practical training. Succesful completion of the course is based on both internal examinations and examinations set by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) at the end of each of the three modules. This nationally recognized diploma will enable graduates to work in the healthcare sector in Kenya and also in many other countries.
To be eligible for admission a student needs to have scored at least a C-minus as a mean score in the KCSE (Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Education) examinations or a comparable secondary school examination score.

Diploma Course in Community Development

Training in Community Development and Social Work takes place under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MoHEST). The training in Community Development and Social Work takes 3 years and includes both theoretical and practical training. The Kenya National Examination Council is the examination body for the course. This nationally recognized diploma will enable graduates to work in the healthcare sector in Kenya and also in many other countries. To be eligible for admission a student needs to have scored at least a C-minus as a mean score in the KCSE (Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Education) examinations or a comparable secondary school examination score. Development of the main campus of CHPK North Coast Medical Training College

The construction of the main campus of CHPK North Coast Medical Training College is finished in Kikambala, Kilifi (mid-way between Kilifi town and Mombasa). At the moment there are three classrooms, girls and boys hostels, toilets, offices, consultation rooms, library-computer room, skillslab and a kitchen.
